Scream VI is the 6th installment of the Scream franchise and the second movie directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett after taking on Scream (2022). After the events of last year’s Scream, Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) have moved to New York City in an attempt to move on from the vicious attacks in Woodsboro. They’re trying their best to cope with this traumatic phase of their lives. Once again, a new Ghostface has returned to seek revenge against them and their friends, and this is yet again another thrilling and incredibly entertaining Scream film that shows why slashers are better on the big screen with a huge audience. This series continues to grow and evolve with compelling characters, masterful direction, and brilliant slasher moments that fans love.
“Who gives a f*** about movies?” Some cast members from Scream (2022) are back, along with some newcomers. It’s an incredible ensemble with actors such as Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving. Courteney Cox is back as Gale Weathers, and Hayden Panettiere reprises her role of Kirby Reed from Scream 4. They’re all terrific and stand out, each in their own way. Whenever they interact with one another, it’s fun to theorize the identity of Ghostface among them with all their different and unique personalities. Unfortunately, you do feel the absence of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.
“I hear you’re a horror fan.” Like the previous Scream, the latest installment is also a remarkable celebration of horror and slasher films. You can tell the filmmakers truly care about this property made popular by Kevin Williamson and the late Wes Craven. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have shown Scream can stay iconic with gripping tension, memorable characters, and bloody Ghostface kills. They find new ways to reinvigorate the genre with some new ideas with set pieces and settings. As usual, the meta references are a lot of fun, particularly if you’re a humongous fan of these movies. The soundtrack is great as well, especially when you have catchy songs from talented music artists like Demi Lovato, Kailee Morgue, and Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park.
If you’re in the mood for a crowd-pleasing and insanely entertaining genre flick on the big screen, Scream VI is worth your time.
