Eternals is a 2021 superhero film that serves as the latest installment set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After winning some Oscars for Nomadland this year, writer and director Chloé Zhao has finally decided to take on her blockbuster debut while still showcasing her signature style of filmmaking. At this point, 2021 will be known as the year of Marvel, especially after the release of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. Taking place after the life-changing events of Avengers: Endgame, Eternals focuses on a group of immortal alien beings who have shaped humanity and lived on Earth for a thousand years. They now have to reunite to prevent a disastrous tragedy from happening and take down their negative counterparts, which are the Deviants. We're ready for the next chapter of Phase Four in the MCU.
“Humanity once believed we were Gods.” To start this review, it’s important to mention the diverse cast of incredibly talented actors like Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Angelina Jolie, and Kit Harington. They’re all fantastic, and they manage to stand out whenever they’re on screen. Zhao has always been great with character development, which is one of the film’s biggest strengths. Admittedly, some of the backstories feel a little rushed at times, particularly with the pressure of introducing a bunch of new protagonists that we have never seen before. There are interesting themes of humanity, friendship, and destiny, which are very unique to see in a Marvel film. It has a profound level of depth that’s quite refreshing to see in a comic book movie.
"Throughout the years we have never interfered, until now." Zhao tries to do something with Eternals, and shows. Visually speaking, it’s remarkable to look at. The cinematography is absolutely stunning with its beautiful landscape shots. Some of the CGI does need a little bit of work, but hopefully, you’re able to let it go. You have to praise filmmakers for wanting to take risks in the MCU, especially when it comes to storytelling and worldbuilding. However, whenever the movie goes back and forth with the past and present, it does get a little jarring. It lacks focus when it comes to maintaining a cohesive storyline. Since they’re introducing a ton of new elements to this world, it heavily relies on exposition to keep the audience updated on these characters and their purpose. There’s so much to take in, and it is an overwhelming feeling at times.
Eternals wonderfully expands the MCU with its compelling themes and impressive characters. It makes you look forward to seeing what they’ll do next in this universe. Not everything works perfectly in this film, but it’s still a brilliant spectacle — you’ll have a blast watching on the big screen.
