My Big Fat Greek Wedding [2002]: Toula (Nia Vardalos) is a part of a traditional Greek family that believes every woman in the family must be married to a Greek man. After being 30 and still unmarried, she feels hopeless till the guy of her dreams, Ian (John Corbett), enters her families restaurant. After building a relationship, Toula fear that her family may not accept her new non-Greek boyfriend.
Comedy stems from the Greek word komoidia: My Big Fat Greek Wedding may just be another “it’s about time you meet my parents” film. Though many films have faded into obscurity, this end is one of the best in the genre. The plot is pretty cookie cutter, but the entire cast of the film is perfect. All the characters in the film are memorable in some way. After revisiting this film after 10 years, I could still almost quote the film from beginning to end.
All the members of Toula’s family have a bit of absurdity, but it never goes as far as being too outlandish; Such as Greg Focker’s (Ben Stiller) family in Meet the Fockers. On another note nothing exactly comes out as being too offensive, which could’ve easily been an option if it were by any other writer. The Portokalos are relatable, and just so likeable; it’s easy to forgive that the film has an uninspired plot. Looking bad at these types of movies, it's never really the plot that gives them credit, but rather it's the interaction and writing between characters.
Though it may seem like just another romantic wedding comedy, it can be enjoyed by anybody (results may vary).
