Hot Tub Time Machine 2 [2015] is the comedy sci-fi flick directed by Steve Pink, which takes place after the cumulative hi-jinks that debuted in cinemas five years ago. The story takes place after the main characters have amassed fame and fortune from getting all the perks of time travel. It stars some familiar faces from the first installment: Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, with no John Cusack in a lead role (supplemented by Adam Scott to fill in the void).
Mockery 101. Either intentional or not, it does not hesitate to mock time travel and the science fiction genre, with convoluted explanations and exaggerated consequences for all involved. It’s very difficult to figure out if the science in that fiction even checks out. It’s primarily a comedy, where the viewer can almost live vicariously through what seems is almost a blatant rip-off or an endearing homage to the Back to the Future franchise.
What’s so funny? I will admit, I chuckled. There are some moments where you’ll hate yourself for finding the most awful things humorous. A bit strange that there’s a theme of suicide that keeps reoccurring throughout, in a dramatic and serious tone that honestly feels out of place. Packed with lewd imagery, drug references and a bunch of cool bros bro'ing out.
